HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN ABIDJAN

“Fierce Fighting in Abidjan”, “Clashes Breakout across Cote d’Ivoire”, “Foreigners Flee” are some of the headlines telling the story of the violent civil unrest that has erupted across the Ivory Coast over the past several months.

Since the presidential elections last fall, more than 3,000 lives have been lost as an already divided country took up arms in defence of one candidate over another.

Bullets, shelling, and looting have forced thousands to barricade themselves in their homes or run helter skelter across the capital looking for refuge. Reports indicate that four million people are trapped in Abidjan, unable to flee the city.

“Last week a colleague and I spent the night in an abandoned bank building in the besieged area of Yopougon. Families are trapped by the fighting. Sounds of gunfire and exploding shells accompanied our deliveries. Today the city is still under siege. Food, water and medicines are in short supply.”
